With Spring in the air and the sound of turkey gobbles echoing through the woods, Cypress Creek opened the South Carolina lowcountry turkey season last Tuesday with a bang. Three

bangs to be exact, but unfortunately no turkeys.

However that all changed the second afternoon when Gary, down again with our good friend Art from DE, shot a big triple-bearded limbhanger with his guide Justin calling. The bird weighed 17lbs, had a 9.25in beard and 1.2in spurs. Justin then followed that up this week with a giant bird with Dave, down for a few days from PA; that bird weighed 20 lbs, had an 11inch beard and 1.25 inch spurs.

Cypress Creek was also honored to have turkey hunting legend Larry Proffitt down for a few days again this season, and as usual, he rolled up a big bird while here hunting in the lowcountry too. So a huge congratulations to Larry, Dave and Gary and a big thank you to everyone that came and hunted the opening week of turkey season with us.

And despite the early, warm Spring weather, the hogs have also been moving better over the last few weeks. And just like with the turkey hunts, we have had more misses, wounds and close calls then we care to remember, but that is all part of real hunting. However quite a few hunters did connect and provide their hogs

a free ride on the van’s bumperbuddy back to the lodge. Lucky hog hunters included Brook who shot a nice boar at Boggy while his buddies Bill, Shawn and Josh killed meat hogs. Other fortunate hunters over the last two weeks were Brandon and Jake from MD who also shot meat hogs along with Doyle, Jimmy and Sean. Some bigger hogs were also shot by Chris who took a medium boar,  Dennis with a big sow and our IL friend David’s son Ryan who took a tasty 150lb sow. We also had a good archery kill during a morning hunt at the bow camp when Steven arrowed a 175lb boar at 9am.

The warm temperatures are supposed to continue, so it  looks like we will have nice weather for the rest of our Spring gobbler hunts in addition to our hog hunts. So give us a call if you are looking to get in the woods to chase an elusive lowcountry longbeard or South Carolina’s version of a rhino. We look forward to seeing you here!
