This past weekend, Cypress Creek Hunting Lodge hosted another great long-range shooting class provided by Tactical Rifles out of Florida. We had over 30 shooters attend this time, and they all got to put their hands and trigger fingers on some of the best rifles made – right here in America no less! The instructors covered everything one needs to know about shooting up to 1000 yards, and with their expertise, were able to take the student shooters and have them hitting accurately way down range. So a huge thank you to David Rooney of Tactical Rifles for bringing his guns, instructors and knowledge to the lowcountry and sharing them all!

And while here in South Carolina, some of the long-range shooting class attendees also hit the woods Friday and Saturday afternoon hoping to put their new-found skills to the test on some moving, live targets. However, while several did see hogs and deer, the only shot taken was by a young man who hit a giant buck that the guides were unable to recover. But as we always say, that is hunting. And while we hate to have it happen, that shows the difference between shooting a target from a bench and shooting a moving, living wild animal under real-world conditions. That is something that will never change no no matter what gun you shoot or how many shooting classes that you take!

And while we had no kills this past weekend, two weekends ago we did have several successful hunters including our friend Joe from NC. He was down with Randy and Gene for their monthly 1 day hunt, and he rolled up a tasty meat hog. Another successful hunter was Kimberly, and she took her first buck two weeks ago while down from Alabama with her husband Kerry. It was a nice 5 point with a tall rack still covered in velvet that they are mounting to commemorate the trip. That same weekend, we also had Tom hunting with us, and he managed to not only shoot a nice buck, but a good boar hog too. His only complaint was that the buck he shot was the smaller of the two that he saw!

Then, last weekend we had Tom from MD down again. This time he brought along his son T.J., who was on his first hunt ever. And boy did he show his dad that he had been practicing! T.J. rolled up two nice hogs with one of them being a real 275lb monster with almost 3 inch cutters. So again, while we don’t usually have many hunters until it cools off, the ones we have had have had some good luck here in the lowcountry.

It is now the middle of September, and we are preparing for our fall rut hunts that start around mid October when the bucks start to crank up in their search for girlfriends. The rut usually builds until it is in full affect around Halloween and then continues through mid November. However the bucks will keep looking for does through the end of the season, especially if the South Carolina lowcountry has a  lot of cold weather. So give Becky a call and get your rut-hunt dates down on the books before someone else takes them. We are looking forward to a great Fall, and we would love to be hunting with you!
