South Carolina Hog Hunting 2014 Begins

Wild hogs are definitely on the agenda here at Cypress Creek Hunting Lodge for many hunters and the number of wild hogs still seem to be on the increase in the low country of South Carolina.

Before we get into the hog harvest in January, we would like to reflect on our last deer hunt of the season.  In SC the first Saturday after the regular deer season is over, it’s youth deer day.  This day has been set aside by the SCDNR for youth under the age of needing a regular hunting license.  On this day only the youth can hunt for deer.

This year we had a young hunter from the upstate here at Cypress Creek Hunting Lodge to take advantage of this special day of hunting.  Logan Patty from the Greenville area was here with us, along with his dad Jack.  Logan is a young hunter that knows how to shoot!  Logan harvested his first deer ever and made a great shot on a nice 6pt buck.  Although Logan was very excited about his buck, it was his dad Jack that clearly showed his excitement as most proud fathers would.  This was the last buck harvested at Cypress Creek Hunting Lodge to complete the 2013 season.  Congratulations Logan!!DSC01802DSC01804

DSC01800Logan was also in the stand with his dad to see Jack harvest a nice hog out of a big group of hogs.  It’s always a great thing when a father and son can share quality time together in God’s Great Outdoors.

As most of us outdoorsmen know there will finally be a new Cabela’s in Greenville, SC opening March 31, 2014.  Jack Patty will be the General Manager of this new Cabela’s.  I can honestly say they could not find a better person for the job than Jack Patty.  He is a very knowledgeable and compassionate outdoorsman.  I’m sure Cabela’s will be very proud to have him on their team.  We wish him all the best!

Now for more South Carolina Hog Hunting from January.  This month is always a transition month from primary deer hunting to hog hunting and it only gets better in February and March.  Hog hunting in January has been pretty good overall.

Over Martin Luther King weekend we had our annual group of guys from Charlotte & Winston Salem, NC.  We had a full house, but not all of them hunted.  Some just came along to hang out with their friends.  Gregg shot 2 big boars, Mark shot 2 nice hogs and David also took home a nice hog.Carl Hearn 2014

096Burl Tilson was down from TN with his dad Larry.

Larry saw the most hogs, but it was Burl that took a real nice 170# boar back to TN.  Way to go guys!

Scott Herman from Boone, NC was here hunting and spent the entire day in the stand to harvest this great 175# boar at the last minute that he could shoot. 098 Scott is a serious hunter and a great guy.  We really enjoyed the time with him and his two friends, Harold & Chris.

101 14 year old Cole was down from NC with his dad Virgil and harvested a huge 180# sow to take home.  I think it was his dad that was the most excited and proud, and rightfully so.

As usual there were plenty of hogs seen during January that were not shot, were missed, small meat hogs shot or that were too damaged for proper photos.  January hog hunting has been good, even with the extreme cold rains and ice.  February and March should be some of the best hunting and we can hardly wait.

Once again we want to thank all of our friends and guests that hunt with us at Cypress Creek Hunting Lodge and we hope to share more time in the low country outdoors with you in the near future.  As always “Pursue The Experience”.
