Hot, Dry Weather Holding Up The Rut; Should Change This Weekend!

The hot and dry weather that has been gripping the South Carolina lowcountry for the last few weeks has really been holding up the rut by keeping a lot of the buck movement after dark. This combined with the tons of acorns on the ground allowing the deer to feed back in the bush and not on the corn as well as this past week’s full moon have also worked against us. However the nice rain we just had along with this weekend’s coming cold front and improving moon, the big boys should finally be ready to move.

But even with the conditions not favoring good hunting this past week, our hunters have still managed to see quite a few good bucks, shoot at some and kill a few. Dennis missed two good bucks but shot a nice doe while Randy and his son shot a 6 point. We also had Wayne and his wife Angela down for a few days, and after passing several opportunities, Wayne took a good 7 point as well as a huge 118lb doe. And despite the super dry weather that has been holding down the hogs even worse than the deer, Tom Jr. was able to pick out a giant 188 pound sow from a pack of 8 while his dad knocked down a smaller meat hog at the River.

Two of our good friends also scored over the last few days. First we had our guide Justin, from PA and looking for his first good lowcountry buck, take a giant-bodied 193 pound 11 point. Then we had Rhonda, mom to our other guide Quentin, harvest her very first deer – a good 8 point! And the hunt was even captured on camera by Danny, so check out the video.

Now we have a couple of days to get ready for our big BassPro group that will be in this weekend. And it should be prime time for them… A good cold front will move through late Thursday that should drop our lows down into the 40s! This combined with the moon moving into the first quarter and the recent rain we just had should give everyone the best chances possible. We look forward to having them and then
